Mother Teresa
The world has produced many
great personalities in the past. Some of them are gifted with God’s special
‘call’, perhaps the most illuminating example is Mother Teresa. She was a
teacher, a nun, and a social reformer and her works with far-reaching impact completely
transformed the lives in the slums of Calcutta. She rises as a savior and
uplifts the whole society. It was Mother Teresa who foresaw
the need for a total transformation for the poor and helpless in the Calcutta
slums. It was only her efforts that eliminated the tensions of the
destitute and dying in the slums of Calcutta and breathed an air of love,
care, and freedom.
Childhood
Born on 26th August
Mother Teresa (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhju) was the youngest child of her parents. At
the age of 8, she lost her father, Nikkole. It was her mother, Dranafile, who
sowed the seeds of charity into the heart of little Agnes. She greatly helped
in shaping the religious ideas of Agnes. At the age of eighteen, she realized
her way and chose to be a nun. Her long career began with an assignment as a
teacher at St. Theresa School in West Bengal and reached the highest glory as a
saint, she deserves it.
According to Mother
Teresa, God and love are the two sides of the same coin. The principle of
love she took from the life of Jesus Christ. Love was the most important
element of her personality and it was her investment. According to her, all
relationships, whatever may be, are woven into beautiful patterns with the
thread of love. She saw God even in the lowest and poorest persons. She
experienced God’s presence in the poor and helpless. She also believed in the
power of a smile. A smile can melt any heart and win any
heart.
Angel Chosen by God Almighty
In 1946, on a train journey
to the Himalayas, Mother Teresa experienced a call from The
Almighty God that paved the way for entering into a new life with a single
mission, love. She established a new congregation- "Missionaries of
Charity". In 1995, ‘Nirmal Hriday’- the home of the charity was opened. Within
a short period, many social service centers were opened by Mother
Teresa. Orphanages for children, homes for leprosy patients, and charitable
dispensaries are some of them.
A Long List of Honors
Mother Teresa divine mother of India was honored with several awards
and prizes with one voice. She was the recipient of many national as well as
international awards. Nobel Peace Prize, Ramon Magsaysay Award, Jawaharlal
Nehru Award, Bharat Ratna, and Pope John XXIII Peace Prize are some of them.
Spreading the message of love, she stands as a beacon of light for future
generations.
A Saint, Who Dedicated Her Life to the Poor and
Abandoned
Mother Teresa devoted her whole life to noble and worthy causes like
serving the poor, sick, destitute, and dying. She was great because she was
more humane than the rest of us. She became extraordinary through the
expression of the ‘ordinary’ values of love, care, and smile. On 5 September
1997, when she breathed her last breath, she had already created history in her
respective field by that time, the tremendous moral and spiritual weight felt
by the world. In reality, she did not belong to India, Ottoman, or
Yugoslavian. Like all saintly messengers of God, she also belonged to the whole
of mankind.
